Japan’s Empress Emerita is recovering from COVID-19

Empress Emerita Michiko, 89, has recovered from symptoms of COVID-19, Imperial Household Agency officials said Monday.

The former empress tested negative for the coronavirus on Monday morning. An aide said the agency will help Empress Emerita return to normal life while her condition is closely monitored.

The Empress Emerita began coughing on June 2 and complained that something was wrong with her throat on June 3, when her infection with the virus was confirmed in a PCR test.

Because her symptoms were mild, Empress Emerita stayed at her residence in Tokyo’s Minato Ward rather than being hospitalized.

Emperor Emeritus Akihito, 90, tested negative for COVID on June 3. Since then, according to the assistant, there has been no change in his health.
