TOKYOApr 02 (News On Japan) – The Japanese government’s ‘Volcano Research and Investigation Headquarters’ was inaugurated on April 1 with a ceremony marking the beginning of its mission to centralize the observation and research of volcanoes, with the aim of improve disaster prevention measures.
The headquarters is tasked with developing methods for assessing volcanic activity across the country and addressing disaster prevention challenges.
By collecting and analyzing research results from governing bodies and universities, it aims to strengthen measures against the country’s 111 active volcanoes.
Until now, observations and research have been mainly carried out by the Meteorological Agency and various research institutions. However, the need for an organization to centrally manage these efforts, similar to earthquake research and investigation, was noted.
The first headquarters meeting is expected to take place early this month.
