Prime Minister Fumio Kishida celebrated his 1,000 days in office on Saturday, becoming the country’s eighth prime minister to reach that milestone since the end of World War II.
To extend his term, Kishida must win the upcoming leadership election of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. However, there are no clear prospects for his re-election as LDP chairman, as his cabinet’s approval ratings remain low, fueling a sense of crisis within the party ahead of the next general election.
โI have been working on challenges day in and day out with a sense of urgency,โ Kishida told reporters at the prime minister’s office on Friday. โThis buildup has led to today.โ
