Tokyo (Jiji Press) โ Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida headed to Seoul on Sunday to meet with Chinese and South Korean leaders during a trilateral summit aimed at promoting forward-looking cooperation between the three countries.
โIt is of great importance that the leaders of the three countries, which have major responsibilities for regional peace and prosperity, come together to discuss regional and international issues,โ Kishida said before departure at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.
Kishida said he wants the three leaders to agree on a forward-looking partnership. โI hope this will lead to the revitalization of the Japan-China-South Korea process.โ
He will meet Chinese Premier Li Qiang and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on Monday at the three-way summit, the first of its kind in more than four years.
The three leaders are expected to discuss ways to promote free and fair trade and investment, tackle common challenges such as the fight against infectious diseases and strengthen cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. It is expected that North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs will also be high on the agenda.
On Sunday afternoon, Kishida will meet Li and Yoon separately to discuss bilateral and regional issues.
