LDP and CDP disagree on the fate of fundraising parties

The Liberal Democratic Party and Japan’s main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party remain divided over whether the country should continue to allow political fundraising parties, following a scandal surrounding the ruling party.

At a meeting of a special committee on political reforms in the House of Commons on Friday, the CDP urged a complete ban on fundraising parties, while the LDP stressed the importance of maintaining the events.

The daylong session was held to discuss bills introduced separately by the ruling and opposition parties to amend the Law on Control of Political Funds, in the wake of the revelation of the creation of slush funds by LDP factions through fundraising parties.
