French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview published Thursday that the issue of sending Western troops to Ukraine would arise “legitimately” if Russia were to break through the Ukrainian front lines and Kiev made such a request.
Macron doubled down in the interview on his comments from earlier this year, not ruling out sending troops to Ukraine, sending shockwaves through Europe and restive allies including Germany. Most of France’s allies at the time said they would not send troops.
The weekly said Macron gave the interview after delivering a keynote speech last week in which he declared that Europe is “mortal” and could “die,” partly due to the threat posed by Russian aggression following the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
