PARIS – In an effort to bring high-quality clothing made entirely in Japan to a global audience, a Japanese clothing industry group held its first exhibition of such garments in Paris.
The Japan Apparel and Fashion Industry Council timed the exhibition to coincide with Men’s Fashion Week held in the French capital until Sunday. The exhibition featured clothing made in municipally approved domestic factories throughout the production process, from fabric production to the dyeing process and stitching. Although domestically made garments are often squeezed out of the market by cheaper imports, the council aims to expand sales channels by highlighting the excellent quality of the clothing. The items carry a ‘J Quality’ label, which indicates that each garment is made in Japan through a consistent production system, from raw material to finished product.
More than 60 menswear pieces were on display, including sleek jackets with handmade stitching from skilled artisans and knitwear with intricate designs.
The organizers of the exhibition have reportedly received many inquiries, including from an Italian department store that was keen to open a store for the garments for a limited time.
“Japan is known for its attention to detail throughout the production process,” said Hisayoshi Sakurai, senior manager at the council. “We hope this exhibition will boost sales around the world and boost these garment production areas.”
Council members include clothing manufacturers and other companies.
