Makoto Hasebe, former captain of the Japanese football team, announces his retirement

Former Japan national team captain Makoto Hasebe, 40, announced his retirement from football at the end of this season. He currently plays for the German Bundesliga team Frankfurt.

Hasebe has captained Japan in three World Cup tournaments, and in 81 matches, the most in the country’s history.

He played in the German Bundesliga at the highest level for 16 years.
