The Ministry of Transport on Monday called on Japan Airlines President Mitsuko Tottori to issue a stern reprimand following a series of recent incidents involving JAL aircraft.
The ministry demanded that the company take measures before June 11 to prevent a recurrence.
In response, Tottori said the company deeply regrets having caused great concern and will take appropriate action after a full analysis of the incidents.
The reprimand was issued in response to a total of five incidents involving JAL in Japan and abroad since last November.
On Thursday, the wingtip of a JAL plane carrying about 300 passengers struck that of another JAL plane on a parking ramp at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. On May 10, a JAL aircraft scheduled to take off from Fukuoka Airport crossed a stop line after being ordered to stop and approached a runway, causing an incriminating aircraft on the runway to abort take-off. No injuries were reported in either case.
The ministry conducted an on-site inspection of the company on Friday under the Civil Aviation Act.
