The number of American tourists traveling to Japan has increased significantly this year, attracted by the falling value of the yen. This also means that foreign investors are much more interested in the Japanese hotel market.
The number of Americans arriving in Japan by air exceeded 900,000 in the first five months of 2024, a 17.4% year-on-year increase and a 35.5% increase from 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, data from the International Trade Administration showed.
While increased travel demand since the end of the pandemic has also contributed to the increase, the recent fall of Japan’s currency to a 38-year low against the dollar has been a major factor, boosting the purchasing power of American tourists.
