North Korea announces plans to launch a satellite by June 4

North Korea has informed Tokyo that it plans to launch its second military spy satellite by June 4, Japan’s coast guard said Monday morning, as top leaders from Japan, South Korea and China gathered for a rare trilateral summit in Seoul.

The Coast Guard said the launch window would extend through June 4, with the North Korean message identifying three areas near the Korean Peninsula and the Philippine island of Luzon as maritime danger zones where debris from the rocket carrying the satellite could fall.

The zones were the same as those designated before the North’s last successful satellite launch in November. Shortly after that success, Pyongyang announced plans to launch three additional reconnaissance satellites into orbit.
