Government-funded demolition work has only been completed on about 4% of the homes damaged by the January 1 earthquake on the Noto peninsula, for which the procedure was requested.
According to the Ishikawa Prefectural Government, requests have been filed for the government-paid demolition of more than 20,000 residential buildings in the prefecture, which was hit hard by the 7.6-magnitude quake.
Officials say efforts to issue demolition orders and begin demolition work are being delayed due to a lack of experience among local government officials and consultants dealing with the situation. There is also a shortage of accommodation facilities in the Okunoto region in the northern part of the peninsula.
