Peruvian politician Keiko Fujimori appeared in a Lima courtroom Monday to begin what is expected to be a massive, years-long trial for allegedly laundering millions of dollars during her failed bid for the presidency.
Fujimori is one of Peruโs most influential and polarizing politicians, having finished second in presidential elections three times and led the countryโs largest congressional group. She is also the daughter of disgraced former President Alberto Fujimori, who was jailed for human rights violations but has returned to political life after being pardoned.
Keiko Fujimori is accused of running a criminal enterprise that laundered some $17 million to finance her presidential campaigns in 2011 and 2016. Notable contributors included Brazilian conglomerate Odebrecht and Peruvian financial services company Credicorp. While she has acknowledged some campaign contributions, she denies any wrongdoing.
