Sengoku samurai warlords transform into easy-to-brew fruity-flavored tea tablets

Japanese tea company Olive has joined the growing ranks of offering high-quality tea in tablet form, cleverly called ‘chablets’ (a combination of the English and Japanese word for tea, cha). The latest chatlet offering is sure to appeal to history buffs due to its connection to Japan’s Sengoku Warring States of the 15th and 16th centuries, when the families of prominent samurai vied for power in near-constant uprisings and civil wars.

Olive was inspired to create this Sengoku Kamon (煎國花紋) set in response to a theoretical alternate version of history: “What would have happened if warlords competed on the deliciousness of tea instead of military strength”? The name Sengoku Kamon also includes a clever kanji play by switching the character used for sen from “war” to “infuse/brew” and the character for ka from “family” to “flower” to change the spelling of Sengoku To imitate Kamon (戦国家紋), or ‘Sengoku family crests’.

▼ True to the name of the set, the family crests of six prominent historical warlords are printed on the chablets.

Sengoku Kamon imagines six famous warlord families as types of tea without additives, naturally flavored tea. The crowning glory is that the flavors selected for each individual clan have been chosen based on the local specialties and famous food items from the places associated with each of them throughout Japan.

Here are the clans and their respective flavors, along with the origins of the natural flavors.

● Tokugawa: Strawberry flavored Ceylon tea, Shizuoka Prefecture

● Takeda: Ceylon and Darjeeling Grape Flavored Tea, Yamanashi Prefecture

● Toyotomi: Matcha with sweet osmanthus flavor and gold dust, Osaka Prefecture

● Oda: Orange Pekoe Tea with Peach Leaf Flavor, Aichi Prefecture

● Akechi: Assam tea with chestnut, apple and rosehip flavors, Gifu and Kyoto prefectures

● Chosokabe: Japanese black tea with pear and sweet osmanthus flavor, Kochi prefecture

The tea flavors themselves are not the only draw, as the box itself is a beautiful keepsake with the six family crests printed in gold on the packaging. It is even designed to stand upright using two small legs, so you can enjoy it as a decoration after drinking the tea.

Plus, if you’ve never used a chablet before, don’t worry, as each chablet is perfectly portioned with the right amount of condensed tea, so there’s no need to measure or remove tea leaves. For hot tea, simply steep one chablet in 180 milliliters of hot water for three minutes, and for iced tea, steep one chablet in 500 milliliters of cold water for one hour.

The set also comes with a small package konpeitoJapanese candy sugar, which can be used to sweeten tea or eaten as a snack.

The Sengoku Kamon Flavored Tea Set costs 3,300 yen and makes a stylish souvenir for yourself or a tea-loving friend who also loves Japanese history.
