Shinjuku in Tokyo bans street drinking at night on Halloween

Shinjuku in Tokyo bans street drinking at night on Halloween, Tokyo’s Shinjuku Ward Assembly unanimously passed an ordinance on Friday to ban street drinking at night in certain entertainment districts during Halloween.

On October 31 and November 1, street drinking will be banned at night in Shinjuku 3-chome and Kabukicho 1-chome. There are no sanctions associated with this ban. Local stores are asked to voluntarily stop selling alcoholic beverages.

The move comes as Shinjuku has seen increasing disturbances and other nuisance from young people moving from neighboring Shibuya, where controls on public drinking have been tightened. The Shibuya Ward Assembly this week approved an ordinance to ban street drinking at night around Shibuya Station year-round, effective Oct. 1.
