Studio Ghibli is re-releasing all previous cinema posters and programme booklets

As anyone who has seen a Ghibli film can tell you, the studio’s animated works are filled with so much beautiful artwork that it feels like more than the screen can hold. Perhaps that’s why, in addition to being anime classics, Studio Ghibli’s films all have iconic theater posters.

In Japan, it’s common for movie theaters to have souvenir shops in their lobbies that sell merchandise, including posters, for the films they’re currently showing. However, with Ghibli’s decades-long history of animated excellence, there are many fans who never got to see their favorite title in theaters, so it’s great to hear that the entire Ghibli movie poster collection is being re-released.

The revival comes from Ghibli specialty store chain Donguri Kyowakoku, which made the announcement via its official Twitter account. In addition, the program booklets for all Ghibli films, featuring artwork and commentary, are also being reprinted and will go on sale the same day as the posters.

Donguri Kyowakoku isn’t always the cheapest place to get your fix of anime merchandise, but the posters are reasonably priced at 1,320 yen each, and the programs cost 1,100 yen (with the exception of the programs Boy and the Heron and Earwig and the Witch, which are only 820 yen).

It is important to know that the posters and programs are only available at a limited number of branches of the chain, as listed below.

● Tokyo Skytree Town Solamachi (Tokyo)

● Ikebukuro (Tokyo)

● Landmark Plaza (Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture)

● Lucua Osaka (Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture)

● Shinsaibashi (Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture)

● Sakae-koen (Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture)

● Nagoya Takashimaya Gate Tower Mall (Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture)

● Hakata Canal City (Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture)

● Sapporo Park (Sapporo, Hokkaido Prefecture)

Donguri Kyowakoku also limits the purchase of each poster and program to one per person, so if you and a friend both have the same favorite Ghibli anime, you’ll have to go shopping together.
