Super cheap, super handy rice cooker mug is a new kitchen gadget star from 3 Coins

Japanese lifestyle brand 3 Coins gets its name from the fact that most of its items are priced at just 300 yen, meaning you can pay for them with three 100 yen coins. However, like 100 yen stores, some 3 Coins items are a bit more expensive. However, we were willing to pay a few more coins when we discovered that 3 Coins sells a very useful kitchen gadget for 550 yen.

It’s called the Kitinto One-Person Rice-cooking Mug and while it looks like a coffee mug with a lid at first glance, it’s actually meant to make rice. It allows you to make a portion for one person in the microwave, without the need for a special rice-cooking device.

In the mug you can cook 150 grams of rice. After adding the uncooked rice grains, first put the outer lid on.

The slats of the outer lid allow you to pour water to wash the rice, and also allow you to drain the water without worrying about accidentally throwing away the rice. Once the rice is washed, remove the outer lid, add water up to the inside of the cup, and attach the inner lid first and the outer lid on top.

3 Coins then says to soak the rice in the water for 20 to 30 minutes (20 minutes in summer and 30 in winter), then put the mug in the microwave for 10 minutes to cook. Once that time is up, take the mug out and let it sit for 20 minutes to steam, and when you open the lid, you’ll have a cup full of freshly cooked rice

The rice is soft, fluffy and tasty, comparable to the result of preparing rice in a rice cooker.

From start to finish, it takes about an hour to make rice with a 3 Coins mug, so you’re not really saving a ton of time. If you’re only making one serving, you’ll have a lot less to wash up because the mug is compact and only has three parts. And while we decided to be classy and transfer our rice to a bowl before eating, you can actually eat straight from the mug, which is one less thing to wash up.

The Kitinto One-Person Rice-cooking Mug is also a fraction of the price of a dedicated rice cooker, which can easily cost upwards of 10,000 yen, so if you’re trying to set up a home kitchen on a budget or without a lot of counter space, you can opt for this over just a microwave. It’s also a great portable option, as it allows you to cook rice anywhere you have access to a microwave, and the single-person portion means you don’t have to worry about storing leftovers.

▼ You can also use the mug for cooking takikomigohanrice dishes in which extra ingredients and herbs are cooked together with the rice.

While the 550 yen price tag means the Kitinto can’t be purchased for the normal price of 3 coins, we think it’s definitely worth the five and a half coins they’re asking for it, and it can be ordered online here.
