The EU elections could force a sharp turn in electric car policy

A change at the top of Europe’s institutions could herald a change in the 2035 target to phase out sales of cars with combustion engines, even as the auto industry is already well on its way to transitioning to electric vehicles.

After lengthy negotiations, the European Union member states reached a historic agreement in 2022: from January 1, 2035, the only new cars that can be sold in the bloc will be those without CO2 emissions.

So in just over a decade, petrol and diesel cars will no longer be in showrooms, and sales will be limited to battery-electric or hydrogen-powered vehicles.
