The ‘Gyaru’ culture is making a comeback as companies strive to loosen up meetings

Young Japanese women called gyaru (girls), who wear flashy clothes, dye their hair bright and wear heavy makeup, were once trendsetters in youth culture, especially in the 1990s and early 2000s. Now, however, they are flourishing as communication gurus in workshops held at companies and government offices across the country.

Training sessions involving Gyaru’s communication skills, such as an emphasis on following your gut, are attracting attention as a way to transform unproductive meetings and boring office presentations into something more interactive and flexible.

One company offering such consulting services is Tokyo-based CGO.com. The company started offering brainstorming sessions in 2020 to demonstrate how gyaru communicates openly and honestly. To date, the company has offered its services to approximately 50 customers, including major companies such as Nissan and Japan Freight Railway.
