The Japan Times receives an honorable mention at the SOPA 2024 Awards for Editorial Excellence

A long-form article on Japan’s relationship to sitting, written by staff writer Thu-Huong Ha and published by The Japan Times, Ltd. (Chairman, Publisher and President: Minako Suematsu) received an Excellence in Arts & Culture Reporting (Regional/Local ), Honorable Mention from The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) at the SOPA 2024 Awards for Editorial Excellence.

SOPA is a Hong Kong-based non-profit organization committed to the pursuit of excellence in journalism. The SOPA judges of the Japan Times entry said: โ€œThis contemplation on sitting is extensively researched and delightful, making it a unique and compelling piece of work.โ€

Takashi Yokota, editor-in-chief of the Japan Times, commented on the SOPA award for the piece:

โ€œThe award is a testament to Thu’s eye for a story, her extensive reporting and excellent writing style. I remember telling her that the story was a sublime reading experience, and I am happy that the jury agrees.โ€

Staff writer Thu-Huong Ha said: โ€œI am very happy to be recognized for my work on the story of sitting in Japan. It was an ambitiously broad undertaking and I’m glad readers saw the value in revisiting something we do every day and take for granted. Sometimes you just have to change the way you sit to find a new angle!โ€

The award winners were announced on June 20 during a live-streamed hybrid SOPA Awards Gala SOPA Asia’s YouTube channel.
