The Japanese team uses the Fugaku supercomputer to develop a language model for AI

A team of researchers from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Fujitsu and others have announced the development of a large language model that could serve as a basis for generative artificial intelligence, using the Japanese supercomputer Fugaku.

The Fugaku-LLM model, which has been extensively trained on Japanese-language data, which makes up 60% of the total training data, revealed on Friday that it is expected to lead to generative AI research tailored to domestic needs.

In May 2023, the researchers – including those from Tohoku University, Nagoya University, government-backed research institute Riken, CyberAgent and Kotoba Technologies – launched the project using the supercomputer jointly developed by Fujitsu and Riken.
