The meeting in Yokohama on nuclear disarmament ends with a call to pay attention to AI

Experts from around the world concluded their two-day meeting in Yokohama on Wednesday with a call for dialogue on the impact of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies on nuclear disarmament.

The theme of the fourth meeting of the International Group of Eminent Persons for a World without Nuclear Weapons was the reconstruction of the arms control system, centered on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

At a press conference, Takashi Shiraishi, special professor emeritus at Kumamoto Prefectural University and chairman of the meeting, underlined the importance of dialogue and cooperation between nuclear haves and have-nots.

The fifteen participating experts came from states with and without weapons, including nuclear powers such as the United States, Russia and China.

Regarding the impact of AI technology on nuclear disarmament and arms control, Shiraishi said there are both risks and opportunities to be exploited. He also said multi-level stakeholders from the nuclear haves and have-nots should build relationships for dialogue and cooperation on this issue.

Shiraishi and others visited Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo to report the outcome of the meeting. Kishida asked them to continue the productive discussions.

The group will prepare a proposal for the NPT Review Conference that will take place in 2026.
