The rise of makeup among Japanese students

TOKYOApril 25 (News On Japan) – Young people in Japan are enthusiastically embracing the world of cosmetics, with a recent survey showing that around 60% of primary school students own some form of makeup.

These young enthusiasts are not just curious; some are even adept at pulling off sophisticated looks, like the “clustered lashes” style made popular by Korean idols.

In Kansai, a sixth grader named Coco showed off her impressive makeup collection, which she built over two years using her pocket money, gifts from her mother and birthday presents. Her dresser has about 100 items, ranging from basic makeup essentials like green-tinted primers that neutralize redness, to her favorite navy blue glitter mascara that adds a sophisticated touch to her lashes.

Coco’s dedication to perfecting her makeup routine reflects a broader trend of children expressing their individuality and gaining self-confidence through cosmetics. This movement is not just about imitating fashion for adults, but also about mastering skills that will make them feel good about themselves. The phenomenon has gained such a following that even fashion magazines aimed at young teens now include cosmetics as regular supplements, signaling a shift towards more inclusive and engaging content for younger audiences.
