Thousands of people took to the streets around Taiwan’s parliament on Tuesday, protesting against measures that would give lawmakers more oversight of the government and that opposition parties are pushing for despite the ruling party’s objections.
The protests outside parliament and a raucous session inside demonstrated the febrile political atmosphere that new President Lai Ching-te faced a day after his inauguration.
An angry China, which claims Taiwan as its territory, considers him a “separatist”, while its Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has lost its majority in the fractured legislature.
