FUKUOKA โ€“ About 1,000 handmade torches illuminate tanada terraced rice fields in Toho village, Fukuoka Prefecture, as part of an event on Saturday. The village says the 400 terraced rice fields, designated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as part of the Tsunagu Tanada Isan national heritage project, have a history of about 400 years. The torchlight event was organized by a local residents committee working to preserve the scenic beauty of the rice terraces and the torches were made with empty cans and set up along the watered terraced rice fields. The light reflecting on the water created a magical atmosphere.
