US Republican attempt to restrict access to abortion fails two years after Dobbs

Two years after the Supreme Court gave the long-sought goal of repealing abortion rights nationwide to the religious right, state-level initiatives to curb access are faltering.

The deadlines for November’s general election are fast approaching, but in state after state, Republican activists are lagging behind the signatures needed to bring anti-abortion initiatives to voters.

Their fight comes even as groups seeking to enshrine abortion rights are easily finding support for their own ballot initiatives โ€” underscoring the political momentum behind the restoration of abortion rights that has crystallized since the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision. The Democrats believe this issue offers the best chance to retain the White House and win control of Congress in November.
