The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that Donald Trump cannot be prosecuted for actions that fall within his constitutional powers as president, a landmark ruling that recognizes for the first time some form of presidential immunity from prosecution.
The justices, led by Chief Justice John Roberts, in a 6-3 ruling, rejected a lower court ruling that had rejected Trump’s claim of immunity from federal criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat to Joe Biden.
The six conservative justices formed the majority, while the three liberal members disagreed with the majority.
