While the US increases import duties on China, imports from China-dependent Vietnam are increasing

As the United States steps up efforts to reduce trade with China by raising tariffs, it has massively boosted imports from Vietnam, which relies on Chinese inputs for much of its exports, data show.

The surge in trade between China, Vietnam and the US has massively widened trade imbalances, with the Southeast Asian country posting a surplus against Washington last year of almost $105 billion – 2.5 times larger than in 2018, when the government -Trump imposed heavy tariffs on Chinese goods for the first time. .

Vietnam now has the fourth highest trade surplus with the United States, lower only than China, Mexico and the European Union.
