Whole boxes of Mystery Meat go on sale in Japan

Between their age-old culinary traditions and thriving restaurant scene, people in Japan can be quite picky when it comes to food. So when a company announces that it will be selling boxes of what it claims are “mystery meat,” you might not expect the nation’s stomachs to growl in anticipation.

However, that’s exactly what’s going on, because the company mentioned is Nissin.

Nissin is best known as the maker of Cup Noodle, Japan’s favorite brand of instant ramen. Although Nissin always offers a range of alternative flavours, the original version is still the biggest seller, thanks in no small part to the fact that it contains chunks of the company’s own Mystery Meat. Nissin’s Mystery Meat is so beloved that the company has received requests from fans to sell it themselves, and that’s exactly what they’re doing with the soon-to-be-available Unlimited Mystery Meat (or Naziniku Hodaias it is called in Japanese).

Unfortunately, the box doesn’t contain a pocket-sized box containing a literally unlimited supply of Mystery Meat. However, it still contains about as much mystery meat as you would get in 47 cups of Cup Noodles, with a total weight of 200 grams.

So what are you supposed to do with all that mystery meat? That’s up to you. The most obvious move would be to pour an extra portion into your Cup Noodle for an extra hearty meal, or perhaps add it as a guest star to another brand of instant ramen. However, Nissin won’t be offended if you decide to just have some Mystery Meat as a snack, possibly combined with an ice-cold beer.

In fact, Nissin explicitly recommends doing just that, and has also shared suggestions for ways to use Mystery Meat as a cooking ingredient.

Nissin’s announcement that it will be selling Mystery Meat-only boxes was met with great delight by Japanese Twitter users, whose comments included:

โ€œThis this this this! This is what I always wanted!โ€

โ€œI absolutely have to buy this.โ€

โ€œI think it would be great with a cocktail of shochu and soda.โ€

โ€œI’ve been waiting for this for so long. I’m going to eat it with udon and soba noodles.

โ€œThey should change the packaging and call it ‘Cup Meat’.โ€

โ€œI just want to pile it up into a big pile of meat on my plate.โ€

โ€œIt’s a wonderful day to be a Mystery Meat maniac!โ€

Unlimited Mystery Meat goes on sale on March 25 and costs 650 yen per box. Oh, and if you’re wondering how a company can get away with selling meat without disclosing what type of meat it is, rest assured. Despite the name, the true identity of โ€œMystery Meatโ€ is no secret, and if you don’t mind the mystery spoiled, the truth is here.
