BOJ’s next rate hike will likely come in January, a former official says

New Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will not hinder the Bank of Japan’s (BOJ) path to a rate hike, with January the most likely timing for the next rate hike, according to a former executive director in charge of monetary policy.

โ€œMy view at the moment is that January has the highest probability,โ€ Eiji Maeda, the former director, said in an interview on Tuesday. ‘That would be about six months since the interest rate increase in July, and that is also the time when the bank announces its figures. latest economic projections.โ€

Before that, the BOJ will monitor three crucial developments: the US presidential election, the trend in services prices this fall and momentum ahead of next year’s annual wage talks.
