Nature lovers walk on Sunday on the side of Mount Kurikoma, which straddles Miyagi, Akita and Iwate prefectures, near the best time to view autumn leaves on the 1,626-meter-high mountain. Many of the trees on the mountainside and at the summit have turned bright red and orange, creating a beautiful atmosphere of deeper autumn for hikers to experience.
According to the city of Kurihara in Miyagi Prefecture, where the starting point for the mountain climb is located, the autumn leaves peaked about a week later than in an average year because it was extremely hot this summer.
