Record-breaking heat wave boosts sales

TOKYOOctober 21 (News On Japan) – Nearly 60% of listed companies reported that this year’s record-breaking heat wave had a positive impact on their operations.

According to Teikoku Databank, 102 listed companies in Japan have released detailed information on the impact of extreme heat this year.

Of these, 63 companies, or about 60%, noted that the heat wave led to an increase in sales or new product development, which had a positive impact on their performance and business operations.

By industry, retail made up the largest share, with around 40% (25 companies) benefiting from the heat.

Sales were especially strong in apparel, including T-shirts and summer clothes, as well as in miscellaneous goods stores selling heat-relieving items such as portable hand fans.

On the other hand, 39 companies experienced negative effects, with retail again accounting for the largest share at approximately half (18 companies).

Outdoor recreation facilities and restaurants reported slow customer numbers due to the intense heat.
