Namba’s iconic Tsutenkaku Tower may be sold, negotiations are ongoing

OSAKANovember 11 (News On Japan) – A proposal has emerged to sell the operating company of Tsutenkaku Tower, an iconic symbol of Osaka’s Shinsekai district. As inbound tourism rebounds in the post-pandemic era, questions arise about the future of this popular landmark.

The beloved ‘symbol of Naniwa’ could be approaching a major turning point. It has come to light that there is a proposal to sell the company that operates Tsutenkaku, located in Shinsekai, Osaka. Nankai Electric Railway is reportedly among the potential buyers, although the sale price and timing remain undecided.

Takayuki Takai, president of Tsutenkaku Kanko, said: “We must preserve Tsutenkaku for the next 100 or even 200 years. We are exploring various options through negotiations with various companies. No concrete decisions have been made at this time.”

Tsutenkaku has also become a favorite spot among international tourists. Although visitor numbers plummeted during the COVID-19 pandemic, there were approximately 1.37 million visitors last fiscal year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. With a height of 108 meters, Tsutenkaku does not match the 634 meters height of the Tokyo Skytree, but it still fascinates visitors with its unique Osaka charm.

The current proposal for a sale has emerged as the attraction’s revenues continue to grow. According to sources, the plan is intended to ensure long-term operations in Tsutenkaku, increasing the economic impact on the area. The idea of โ€‹โ€‹dismantling the tower is reportedly not being considered.

Local bakery owner: “Tsutenkaku is a given here. It would be absolutely unacceptable to lose it.”

Rickshaw Puller: “We make a living here with Tsutenkaku. If it’s for a positive future, I think that’s good.”

Takai: “We have conversations with different companies every day. One of those conversations somehow got leaked (laughs). Nothing has been decided yet. I even wonder: ‘Am I going to be pushed out?’ But I don’t shy away from change, I always strive to make the best choices for Tsutenkaku and fulfill that role.”
