Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward Assembly on Monday unanimously approved an ordinance banning street drinking at night around Shibuya Station, effective October 1.
Currently, the department bans public drinking on Halloween and during the New Year’s Eve and New Year’s holidays.
The new regulation extends the ban year-round, as street drinking has become increasingly common among young people and foreign visitors. People do not risk sanctions for violations.
Drinking on the street is prohibited from 6:00 PM to 5:00 AM
Shibuya first imposed a ban in June 2019 after young people wearing costumes had repeatedly caused trouble during Halloween.
In the neighboring Shinjuku district, an ordinance introduced to the assembly would ban street drinking in Kabukicho and other crowded areas around Halloween.
