Koike and Renho target the declining birth rate in Tokyo

Tokyo’s gubernatorial election will be a battle between incumbent Governor Yuriko Koike and most likely Renho, with the two announcing their campaign promises on Tuesday to strengthen education policies to combat the capital’s falling birth rate.

While many of their goals are similar โ€“ with Renho even praising some of Koike’s child support policies implemented over the past eight years โ€“ Renho claims their main difference is timing, with Koike focusing more on immediate delivery and parenting support, while Renho wants to improve support for Tokyo’s young residents.

At a news conference Tuesday, Koike highlighted the good she had done, such as continuing to push for policies to support women seeking infertility treatments and egg freezing, and subsidizing education. โ€œI will strive for a Tokyo where it does not cost money to raise and educate a child,โ€ she said.
