India’s Modi travels to Moscow on first visit since Ukraine invasion

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday makes his first visit to Russia since the invasion of Ukraine, as Modi walks a fine line between maintaining a long-standing alliance with Moscow and pursuing closer security ties with the West.

Russia is a major supplier of cheap oil and weapons to India, but its isolation from the West and growing friendship with China have had an impact on its centuries-old partnership with New Delhi.

The United States and its Western allies have been cultivating ties with India in recent years as a defense against Beijing and its growing influence in the Asia-Pacific region, while also pressuring India to distance itself from Russia.
