Japan and Britain agree to broad cooperation, including in the field of AI

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer agreed on Thursday to step up cooperation between their countries in a range of areas, including artificial intelligence.

During their first face-to-face talks, held in Washington, the two leaders also reaffirmed that the security of the Euro-Atlantic region and the Indo-Pacific region are inextricably linked.

On July 6, Kishida spoke by telephone to Starmer, who led his party to a landslide victory in the general election on July 4.

They also agreed to promote the joint development of the next generation of fighter jets by their countries plus Italy. They also discussed the situation in the Middle East and East Asia, including North Korea, and reaffirmed their close cooperation.

Separately, Kishida met the new Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof and congratulated him on his inauguration. Schoof indicated that he would like to cooperate with Japan in all areas, including security.

Kishida also held talks with Finnish President Alexander Stubb and confirmed that the countries will strengthen cooperation in security areas, such as defense equipment and advanced technologies, including sixth-generation, or 6G, communications standards.
