Beneath every continent lies a type of rock that may hold the key to permanently trapping planet-warming carbon dioxide beneath the Earth’s surface.
44.01, a startup backed by Sam Altmanโs Apollo Projects, is developing technology that injects carbon dioxide a kilometer underground, where chemical reactions turn it to stone. Such technology is likely to be crucial to limiting the worst effects of global warming.
In addition to the funding from Altmanโs group, the Oman-based startup has raised a $37 million Series A round led by Equinor Ventures with UAE-based Shorooq Partners to expand internationally. Other investors in the round include Amazonโs Climate Pledge Fund and Breakthrough Energy Ventures.
