PARIS โ Japan added another gold medal to its list of achievements on Tuesday, the fifth day of the Paris Olympics, bringing its total to seven this year and putting it at the top of the rankings among all countries and regions.
That seventh medal was earned by Takanori Nagase, his second Olympic gold medal, with a victory in the men’s judo 81-kilogram division. When he won the same award at the 2021 Games in Tokyo, Nagase became the first male judo medalist in his class to win gold back-to-back.
The 30-year-old Nagase also won bronze at the 2016 Games in Rio.
Also on Tuesday, Japan defeated Israel 1-0 in the men’s Olympic soccer tournament, winning all three games in Group D. Japan will face Spain in the quarterfinals.
Japan lost to Tokyo Olympic silver medalists France 90-94 in overtime in the men’s basketball tournament’s Group B on Tuesday, marking the second straight loss for the Japanese team.
Japan’s women’s artistic gymnastics team finished eighth in the competition on Tuesday. With the captain’s withdrawal before the start of the Olympics, the team went into the competition with only four members instead of the standard five.
