From teachers to maritime workers, Japanese civil servants are likely to see their biggest pay rise in more than three decades, a development expected to boost a recovery in consumer demand.
The National Personnel Authority on Thursday recommended a 2.76% increase in the average monthly basic salary for civil servants in the current budget year, the largest increase since 1992. Under the proposal, total wages should rise by about 4.4%.
The human resources authority also proposed a substantial increase in starting salaries for national civil servants, an indication that competition for staff is intensifying as the country’s chronic labor shortage persists. It proposed a 14.6% increase for incoming workers who graduated from universities, compared with a 6% increase for such workers the previous year.
