Nissin Foods is under pressure over pressure it is putting on retailers to raise prices on cup noodles

TOKYOAug. 23 (News On Japan) – Japan’s Fair Trade Commission has issued a warning to major food manufacturer Nissin Foods for allegedly pressuring retailers across the country to raise the retail price of its cup noodles, a potential violation of the Antimonopoly Act.

According to the Fair Trade Commission, Nissin Foods raised prices on five products, including Cup Noodles, in 2022 and 2023. The company then pressured retailers, such as supermarkets across the country, to raise retail prices and even fixed prices for special sales.

In addition, Nissin representatives visited a number of stores to personally check prices.

On August 22, the Fair Trade Commission warned Nissin Foods that such actions could amount to โ€œresale price maintenance,โ€ which is prohibited under the Antimonopoly Act.
