Blood tests show 30% of people face health risks from carcinogenic PFAS compounds

TOKYOAug. 12 (News On Japan) – About 30% of people tested showed worrying levels of the cancer-causing organic fluorine compounds, known as PFAS, in blood tests, according to experts.

PFAS, once widely used in non-stick frying pan coatings, has been linked to cancer, prompting a ban on its production and import in Japan.

In August last year, PFAS levels 520 times higher than the national target were detected in groundwater in Settsu City, Osaka Prefecture. Following this, Associate Professor Harada of Kyoto University conducted blood tests on 1,190 volunteers.

The results, announced on the 11th, showed that about 30% of those tested had levels that exceeded the threshold for health problems.

Experts are now calling on Osaka Prefecture to conduct further blood tests and water quality studies.
