Boeing is in talks with the U.S. Defense Department about what impact the planemaker’s planned debt admission could have on its extensive government contracts, a person familiar with the matter said.
On Sunday, the Justice Department said in a court document that Boeing had agreed to plead guilty to a criminal fraud conspiracy to resolve an investigation into two deadly crashes of 737 MAX planes in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people.
A guilty plea could threaten the companyโs ability to secure lucrative government contracts from the likes of the U.S. Department of Defense and NASA, though government agencies could lift any restrictions. Final details of the deal are expected to be filed by July 19.
