The Canadian government moved swiftly Thursday to end the unprecedented rail shutdown, announcing that the country’s labor board would soon issue a resumption order.
Canada’s two largest railway companies, Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), had earlier in the day locked out more than 9,000 union members, sparking a simultaneous strike on the railways that, according to business groups, could cause hundreds of millions of dollars in economic damage.
The independent Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) will now consult with companies and unions before issuing an order.
