China is likely to detain more Taiwanese people under a law targeting independence advocates. China wants to increase pressure on the new president, according to senior security officials on the island.
A recent move by Beijing to further expand the law amounted to weaponizing domestic law against Taiwan, the two officials, who asked not to be identified discussing the sensitive issue, said at a briefing in Taipei on Friday. The officials spoke based on assessments from Taiwan’s national security apparatus and not on the information they had gathered.
Officials said there have been 15 arrests in recent years. Taiwanese could be detained in China, she added, or in places where extradition treaties have been signed with the country, although that scenario has not yet happened. Any arrests would worsen ties between the two countries, she added.
