Complaints about AI scams are just the tip of the iceberg

The generative artificial intelligence hype train has attracted fraudsters who are using it not only as part of their schemes but also in their advertisements on social media sites. What’s worse is that older and financially vulnerable people are sometimes targeted.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission, which oversees deceptive advertising practices, saw a rise in complaints over the past year about ads that used or claimed to use AI to trick people into scams, according to a complaint document obtained through a Freedom of Information platform.
