Cricket’s T20 World Cup concluded with a classic thriller of a final – with India crowned champions on Saturday – but the tournament could also go down in history as a landmark event for a game eager to expand its global footprint.
With the decision to expand the tournament to 20 teams and hold part of the group stage in the United States, the International Cricket Council (ICC) saw this World Cup as a way to increase the popularity of the sport.
More teams from emerging cricketing nations were given the opportunity to perform on the world stage and Americans were given the opportunity to participate in a sport far below the country’s mainstream sports.
