Duterte’s Senate bid poses threat to former ally Marcos

The Philippines’ dominant Marcos and Duterte political dynasties, uneasy allies for two years, are preparing for an election battle that could upend political stability in the Southeast Asian country in coming years.

Vice President Sara Duterte’s resignation as Education Secretary in President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s cabinet was followed Tuesday by the announcement that her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, and two brothers would run for Senate next year.

The collapse of the alliance had long been expected, but the political challenges from the Duterte men could derail Marcos’s hopes of consolidating power so he can groom a potential successor for 2028, when analysts say Sara Duterte could aspire to the top job. Philippine presidents are limited to one six-year term.
