These are crazy times. Biblical disturbances in nature, such as the repeated torrential rains in Dubai or the massive fish kills in Vietnam’s overheated reservoir, seem to reflect our overheated political and social environment.
At such moments it is crucial to keep a cool head and analyze all strange phenomena as accurately, objectively and soberly as possible. And few phenomena are stranger these days than the protests surrounding Israel’s bombing and invasion of Gaza in response to Hamas’s terrorist attack last October.
We must recognize the rhetoric of some politicized Muslims, such as those who recently demonstrated and chanted in Hamburg, Germany”Caliphate is the Losung” (“Caliphate is the solution”). And we have to admit that, despite the massive presence of Jews among the demonstrators, there are at least a few real anti-Semites among them (just as there are some genocidal maniacs in Israel).
