One such brand is Telma, an emerging Japanese brand that kicked off the week with a fashion show at the Shibuya Hikarie cultural and shopping complex. The brand collaborated with Kyocera Corp. to produce eco-friendly fabrics to make long coats and other items in the collection unveiled at the show.

Traditionally, dyeing fabrics requires a huge amount of water, and water pollution from runoff is a serious problem. But new technology has apparently allowed the company to reduce the amount of water needed to dye 1 kilogram of fabric from 153 liters to just 0.02 liters.

โ€œWe have made progress in creating products that are environmentally friendly,โ€ said Terumasa Nakajima, 42, the designer who founded the brand.
